Comments Growth associated maintenance energy (GAM) is defined as the total energy required for maintenance and growth. Similarly non-growth associated growth (NGAM) is defined as the total energy required for cellular maintenance. GAM and NGAM are measured using a chemostat. GAM is one of the major components of the flux-balance analysis (FBA) growth objective. See Neidhardt, Ingraham, and Schaechter [PUB_0393] for additional discussion of GAM and NGAM. Feist et al measured E. coli GAM and NGAM of 8.39 and 59.81 mmol ATP/gDCW [PUB_0558].
