Comments
Comments Introduction Weakly homologous to DNA-binding protein HU. Canonical HU HU binds circular DNA non-specifically with a Kd of 200–2500 nM and bends DNA, possibly compacting DNA and regulating gene expression [PUB_0085, PUB_0086]. HU forms a homodimer [PUB_0085]. 8-10 HU dimers bind per 275 bp DNA [PUB_0085]. HU condenses DNA 2.4 × [PUB_0085]. HU has also been implicated in recombination and may preferentially bind holiday junctions. HU constrains negative supercoils [PUB_0086], introduces negative supercoils in the presence of nicking-closing enzyme [PUB_0085], and may preferentially binds negatively supercoiled DNA [PUB_0086]. May be regions of chromosome bound by little HU, may be concentrated around periphery of nucleoid [PUB_0087].
